CARES: INTERNET CULTURE SUBMERGED UNDER WASHES OF DISTORTION

CARES EXPLAINS

I’m interested in using human voices to express things without lyrics. I take samples of speech and manually reconstruct them into more expressive forms. I often redefine the perceived age or gender of a voice, sometimes gradually distorting its characteristics throughout a track, making the voice unrecognizable.

The lead single ‘Vendor Day’ off the EP, ‘Coping Strategies’ was inspired by imagery of:

  • A riot in a convention centre full of medical equipment companies
  • A child preaching apocalyptic bible verses explaining he doesn’t understand the words he is preaching
  • Webcam feeds of abandoned hospitals

The full EP, ‘Coping Strategies’ releases May 5th on & Options (Cassette and digital). It explores erosion of meaning and collective anxiety, and people’s attempts at dealing with those things. People seem to be finding the world an increasingly overwhelming and absurd place. Noticing how they deal with that has been finding its way into my work.
I only knew what this EP was about after it was finished. I approach writing with an idea about a sound or a vague feeling or imagery but leave the concepts open ended to try to write in a more abstract and subconscious way.
