THE FAVORITE MUSIC PRODUCTION TOOLS OF WTS

WTS

Please tell our readers a little bit about your background
We are independent producers, artists, songwriters and remixers, Will Mount, Terence Roberts and Sam East. We have been making Pop and Dance music as WTS (What’s That Sound Productions) since 2015. Our backgrounds are a mixture of Pop, Soul, House and R&B.

We wrote and produced a #1 US Billboard Dance/Club song ‘One Night’ ft Gia 2016 in collaboration with Global Groove Entertainment.
Over the years we have worked and collaborated with a variety of dance and club DJ/Remixers both in the UK and US (Blakk Habit, Charles Jay, Mike Delinquent, Shy Cookie, Mike Rizzo, Tracy Young, The Scene Kings, Stonebridge, Angel Manuel and many more.

What is your favorite piece of hardware gear to work with and why?
Favorite Piece of Hardware: Maschine/Komplete – They integrate seamlessly with our DAWs and reduce workflow considerably leaving time to be more creative.

Is there a specific VST plugin that radically changed your workflow?
Izotope/Ozone 9 Advanced – these plugins enable us to get a glimpse of what our finished track could sound like very early in the creation process and raises level of excitement to complete the project.

Do you have a specific workflow when it comes to creating tracks. For instance, do you start with a beat or with a melody?
I tend to start with a bass line and drum arrangement, then move to hook/melody. Sam, tends to start with lyrics and Will uses some experimentation to build full musical arrangements. However, working together as a team means as soon as the groove is established all these elements falls into place. Phew pressure off and pleasure on!!

Which aspect of music production do you feel you excel at?
Song writing and building a groove. More recently we have collectively grown into remixing our own tracks (UK Garage, House and Drum and Bass).

Your best advice to get that kick drum pounding?
We will often use two kick drums, one for the quieter sections and then we’ll add another for the louder bits. We’ll spend some time EQ’ing the bass and kick to make sure they aren’t masking each other and occasionally sidechain triggering a compressor on one to duck it under the other.

Out of all the productions you have made, what would be your personal favorite?
Our favorite production of all: ‘One Night’ ft Gia. It was a collab with Mike Rizzo Funk Generation/US Global Grooves Entertainment. This track comprised of approx. 17 UK and US remixes with DJ Remixers such as The Scene Kings, Tracy Young, Stonebridge, Mike Rizzo, Angel Manuel, Dirty Pop and many more driving this track to #1 US Billboard Dance Club Song Track 2016. We were stoked from the buy in to this track by these remixers as it validated our song writing and production capability.

What is the best advice you have for other producers in the game?
Keep all your ideas do not delete, you will regret it (I have been there). If you are not feeling the groove today you are guaranteed to feel it tomorrow and it’s a great feeling when you go back to it and complete it.
Also, when you are really stuck in a rut play your idea to a fresh ears/collaborator they may be feeling it more than you and that collab could deliver a track better than you ever dreamed. That’s what we do!!

Is there anything else you would like to share?
We all have tracks we loved producing and some others not so much. Don’t get precious with the track always focus on the quality because your audience will love you for it and they may surprise you! Like we said if you are not feeling it save for another day or get fresh pair of ears/collab on it.
